I had just finished Zora Neale Hurston’s Barracoon: The Story of the Last “Last Cargo.” The journey for Zora to meet with the last slave to made the transatlantic voyage and able to have him explain his life from his family history to after slavery. I will say that you are getting a vernacular dialect from Cudjo aka Kossola which you have to take the time to decipher the words to understand his story. The most interesting parts of the story was from how he got the name to his family life after slavery.
It was a good read and well informed about his life. I can understand why the book was not originally published based on the slave trade and his language. However, his story needed to be told and have people learn his life with some meaning of slavery back then. I would recommend anyone to read this book and feel a piece of history from him. I am also will add a Wikipedia article on Cudjo if anyone is interested.
